Blend Materials Crashing 3ds Max 2021

Many DirectX shaders are crashing 3ds Max 2021, including the Wall Worm Blend Materials

Many DirectX shaders are crashing 3ds Max 2021, including the Wall Worm Blend Materials. Unfortunately, this is a regression in 3ds Max 2021 that cannot be fixed by Wall Worm and will have to be addressed by Autodesk. Symptoms of this bug:

  • Opening a Wall Worm WorldVertexTransition or Lightmapped_4WayBlend DirectX material in Slate causes Max to crash to CER.
  • Selecting in the viewport an object with a Wall Worm WorldVertexTransition or Lightmapped_4WayBlend DirectX material in Slate causes Max to crash to CER.

If you get this error, please submit the error report to Autodesk in the CER (Customer Error Report) that pops up. Please also include a link to this page in the report.

Because of this bug, you should not use 3ds Max 2021 for displacement work. Until fixed, please stay on 3ds Max 2020.3.
